 Our Finishes

There's a reason 95% of our planks are sold prefinished. We do it all by hand and pay attention to details better than anyone making prefinished planking today. To get the beautiful deep finishes we offer we use the best stains and top finishes you can buy. This is no place to spare a few dollars. See "Choose the Right Finish" for a candid write-up about what to expect from each finish type.

We offer two types of finishes, each painstakingly applied by hand.

1. European Natural Oil - No Stain - Recommended on any hardwood species we offer

Our European Natural Oil Finish is a great improvement over tung oil and is one of the most beautiful and environmentally safe finishes in the world.   This oil is a micro-porous finish that penetrates and becomes part of the wood.  It is not a wear coat and therefore cannot chip, crack or peel. Photos don't do it justice!

Imported from Germany, where strict environmental standards have been in place for decades, this hard-wax oil consists of thistle oil, sunflower oils, natural vegetable oils, carnauba wax, candallila wax and special hardeners.  On unstained oak it ages to a beautiful golden color that resists stains, wine, alcohol, and water.

It never needs complete refinishing. More accurately, it only requires occasional maintenance which includes easy application of a cleaner wax or the original hardwax oil if necessary to restore the original finish to new condition.

It can be spot repaired perfectly and easily.

This is the easiest floor to live with if you have an active household! (i.e. kids & pets)

It's so good we offer a lifetime warranty against chipping ,peeling or cracking.

2. Woodtone Stains with Durable Top Coats

Woodtone stains add an extra dimension of color to the finish and enhance the graining and character of the planks. We use special wiping stains that allow us to control the penetration and patina of the colors.

Our Stain Colors

Light Colors

Medium Colors Dark Colors Very Dark Colors
French Oak Tavern Brown (best seller) Dark Mahogany Rosewood
Provincial Mocha Moorish Teak Blackthorn* NEW for 2013!

*Blackthorn is a dramatic, semi-opaque black finish that showcases the grain and highlights of the hardwood planks whether top coated with our European oil or super matte polyurethane. Works best with our long red oak planks.

Choose From Two Durable Top Coats to Finish Off the Stains

  • European Natural Oil Top Coats -

Natural oil finish over Tavern Brown Stain. This is our best selling finish combination!

This is the most historic looking flooring we offer. It yields a more natural looking plank that will show “character marks” and signs of aging more than any other finish. It is a magnificent recreation of colonial flooring.

The hand rubbed oil and wood tone stain colors will deepen over time further enhancing the character of the finish.

Almost every floor we've sold for use in homes over 200 years old has been the oil over tavern brown stain.

OR,

  • Commercial Polyurethane Top Coats -

Super Matte Poly on Wide Red Oak Planks

Our Commercial Polyurethane - (Basic Streetshoe XL )- is a clear, UV resistant durable finish. A two-part catalyzed coating, it is one of the best commercial finishes available anywhere in the world.

It is used extensively in homes, restaurants, shopping malls, and gymnasiums throughout the world! (It is the finish used in the US Olympic Training Center and in The Sydney Opera House)

We offer polyurethane in Satin or Super Matte (the most historic look in polyurethane that adds depth with virtually no sheen)

Two coats of polyurethane are hand applied over a coat of catalyzed sealer to ensure proper adhesion. We also finish all edges, ends and bottoms of the planks for stability.
