Our Planks

When customers stop by the shop I ask them to imagine the mood you want from this space.  If it is the feeling and character of an old farmhouse, a colonial period home, a southwestern ranch or even an old New York loft, theyíve come to the right place. We donít do perfect, polished flooring. Our floors have the style and character that years of living add to the planks.

The choices you make (Wood species, edge treatment, level of surface texture and distressing, and finish options) will determine the look, feel and mood of your finished floor.

Old World Charm - Great Value!

100%  Made in Pennsylvania   Every hand crafted plank goes through 10 woodworking steps, some using  traditional hand tools. We match each plank against a master plank to check for fit, edging and straightness so you can be sure they will fit together perfectly. We add just enough distressing and we pay attention to details like matching custom thresholds and authentic 18th century style nails color-matched to the floor.

Your material choices for your planking are defined by these three elements:

  • Wood Species to choose from

  • Edge Treatments

  • Level of Surface Texture and Distressing

Wood Species

We start with the best kiln dried solid hardwood lumber from Pennsylvania and surrounding states supplied to us by a company that has been in the business since 1915!   Our unique hand cut plank floors are characterized by long boards (up to 13 feet, average 9 feet) of solid hardwood with amazing  hand cut texture and beautiful hand rubbed finishes.

We predominantly work with two plank species because they were commonly used in early American homes and are still available locally in abundant quantity and high quality.

  • Rustic White Oak  - Our 3/4 inch thick planks are virtually identical to milled, reclaimed oak usually at a much lower total cost.

(Be sure when comparing reclaimed costs to consider the initial cost of the planks, extra waste factors, installation, finishing and delivery costs)

    Rustic White Oak

    Our Best Selling Plank

Rustic White Oak with Oil Finish

Most popular in the 6 inch width however they are also available in 6,7&9 inch widths. They have beautiful knots and more intricate graining than red oak.

    •  Perfect for the whole house including kitchens and bathrooms. A great choice for almost any style including colonial reproduction, farmhouse, loft or barn restorations and commercial applications such as retail stores, restaurants, etc.

  • Wide Red Oak    - Our select Red Oak will have few knots and more uniform grain than our rustic white oak.  Also kiln dried, 3/4inch thick planks in widths of 6,7 & 9 inches, or 7, 9 & 11 inches.  Very long lengths, will average close to 9 ft.

    • Select Red Oak works with colonial reproduction as well as more formal styles. Most often finished with darker stains and either European oil or polyurethane top coats.

6,7&9 inch Red Oak planks pre-finished with Royal Mahogany stain and European Oil finish

Other Hardwood Species -  We do have other species available including rustic cherry, rustic hickory, wormy red oak, walnut and poplar (poplar is great for painted flooring). Let us know if these are of interest to you and we will prepare a quote based on current market prices for the material.

Each is characterized by long boards (4 to 13 ft, average about 9 ft). Widths range from 5.75 to 10.75 inches (actual face widths). Each style is hand crafted and hand finished with you choice of stains and top coats.

Edge Treatments  We offer three quite different edging styles that really change the character of the floor and can be applied to any species:

Squared & Softened Edging -

Squared & Softened

 Edging

Using hand sanding blocks and occasionally a rasp, we slightly round and soften all the top edges so the floor still has some texture but overall less shape than our hand cut or live edging.

This is a bit more contemporary or formal style. On rustic white oak it's perfect for homes, lofts, barn renovations, and commercial applications.  The joints between planks will be straight and tight. Top edges will have some soft texture between planks so it still has our hand made look and charm of a custom floor.

"Live" Edging -

Live Edging

Live edged planks start with squared and softened edging. We then selectively cut in some random slight gapping between the planks in places so the joints between the planks arenít perfectly straight like a modern floor. They also have a bit more texture on the side edges than squared and softened edges. Inspired by the  original plank flooring we found in a cabin built in 1740 in Lehigh County PA.  These planks will closely resemble reclaimed planking.

Hand Cut Edging -

Hand Cut Edging

Or, we can ease the top edges even more by hand cutting using old style hand tools (leaves some tool chatter) for a more shaped style also true to early colonial planking. The most rustic planks combine the hand cut edging and live edging so the planks have considerable character and shape on the top and the side edges will have some slight random gapping along the edges of the planks so they don't look machined.

Distressing

For a more rustic, aged style extra distressing can be applied to any of our planks in the form

Light Circular Saw Marks with

Live Edging and Deep Brushing

of circular saw marks, band saw marks, worm holes and deeper brushing.

There is no charge for extra distressing.

How much is up to you, your taste and imagination.  The best instruction I ever heard from a customer re distressing was " Do it until you are ashamed!" We did and they looked great.

Most customers who want distressing go with 15% to 25% of the planks will

have some saw marks etc.
