Our Style and Our Finishes

Each Wide Plank (7 to 11 inches) is Carefully and Artistically Handcrafted and Hand Finished

"I thought I'd just let you know that we have our new flooring installed, and it looks great! We couldn't be happier about the product, it's exactly what we were looking for "

  S. Woodworth, Marlborough Mass.

Period Style Planks - Tavern Brown with European Hardwax Oil

We strive to deliver a look reminiscent of traditional wide plank floors from the 1700's. In fact, we have installed our flooring in several Bucks County, PA  homes dating back to 1730 and they fit the decor perfectly.  The look of genuine handmade planks 11 inches wide and over 11 feet long can't be matched by "plank" floors consisting of 4 inch wide boards averaging less than 24 inches in length.  Each plank is hand shaped using authentic old world tools and techniques to scrape the ends and edges just as they would 250 years ago.

Our look is foot worn without being primitive!

100% Hand Made in Pennsylvania   Every wide plank (over 6 inches wide) we make goes through 10 woodworking steps, all by hand with modern and traditional HAND tools. It's not unusual to find two or three of our craftsmen in our shop going over a plank to determine the best way to bring out the natural characteristics of the wood.

Natural Oil Planks

Hand Finished! 95% of our planks are sold pre-finished.  Whether it is our OSMO natural oil or a stained and top coated finish, every coat is hand applied and hand rubbed to achieve a patina that can't be matched by high speed spraying equipment. The Proof! Look on the back of our finished planks (and samples) and you will see a lot of stain coated hand prints (many of them are mine!) We love this work and we do it as well as or better than any one in the country!

"Anyone who lives in a true Colonial home steeped in the past will appreciate the craftsmen at Colonial Plank Floors"

Philadelphia House & Home Magazine

Our Prefinished Extra Wide Planks Are Solid Oak, Not Plywood!

Our prefinished extra wide planks are very different from anything else being offered in the flooring market. They are all handmade from solid 3/4 FAS grade oak not from glued-up pieces made to look like wide boards. . They range from 7 to 11 inches wide and from 3 ft to about 12 ft in length, depending on your application.

Our floors are attached on the surface of the planks with 18th Century rosehead nails.  This is historically consistent with methods used in colonial homes.  The nails have remarkable holding power and have heads with a smooth rounded nub on top (called a rosehead) that polish with traffic to give your floor the timeworn look of an old floor.

Prefinishing has many benefits. We can control the process to ensure proper bonding between coats to guarantee a durable finish. The planks will stay in balance and remain flat right from the start. Our polyurethane,  has won the floor of the year award 15 of the last 17 years!

It is also far easier to work with prefinished planks. You don't have to worry about stains, water spots or tool marks getting trapped under the finish. You can walk on the floor moments after installation.

Want narrower 6 inch Rustic planks? We also offer 6 inch wide rustic planks in a variety of species. (White Oak, Cherry, Hickory, Red Oak).  These planks are tongue and grooved on the edges and have fantastic graining, knots, saw kerfs, sap lines etc. They are unusually long for 6 inch planking, ranging up to 12 ft with the average over 7 ft.

You can install them with or without the rosehead nails. (85% use the rosehead nails).

Most often these planks are prefinished with out Natural European Oil for a warm, softer look.

We Make This Easy for the Builder and the Homeowner!

As part of your order we will prepare an installation plan showing the layout of each row by width.

We strive to duplicate the best old world colonial flooring with modern materials to make it durable and easy to live with.  Because of the way we do it,  even a novice do it yourselfer can get professional results!

Our Finishes

We Offer Natural Oil and Low VOC Polyurethane

(Our Finishes comply with all existing State and Federal Environmental Standards for volatile organic compounds )

Fantastic European Oil Finish! Now with a Lifetime Guarantee!

We Proudly Offer An Amazing Hard-wax Oil Finish From Germany

Natural oil finish with 18th century rosehead nails

Our European Natural Oil Finish is one of the most beautiful and environmentally safe finishes in the world.   This oil is a micro-porous finish that penetrates and becomes part of the wood.  It is not a wear coat and therefore cannot chip, crack or peel. Photos don't do it justice!

Imported from Germany, where strict environmental standards have been in place for decades, this hard-wax oil consists of thistle oil, sunflower oils, natural vegetable oils, carnauba wax, candallila wax and special hardeners.  On unstained oak it ages to a beautiful golden color that resists stains, wine, alcohol, and water.

It is as hard as polyurethane yet never needs complete refinishing. More accurately, it only requires occasional maintenance which includes easy application of a cleaner wax or the original hardwax oil if necessary to restore the original finish to new condition.

It can be spot repaired perfectly and easily.

Cottage Walnut with Super Matte Polyurethane

This is the easiest floor to live with if you have an active household! (i.e. kids & pets)

The finish does not rest on top of the wood but is absorbed where it hardens and creates a softer more natural look.

It's so good we offer a lifetime warranty against chipping ,peeling or cracking.

By far the best value in prefinished wide plank floors available anywhere!

Top Coat Choices Over Woodtone Stains

Do you want a Polyurethane top coat or Our European Oil Finish?

Polyurethane Top Coat

Our Commercial Polyurethane is one of the best polyurethane finishes available anywhere in the world and is used extensively in restaurants, shopping malls, and sports centers throughout the world.  This finish has won the floor of the year award 15 of the last 17 years!   It has very low volatile organic compounds (VOC's) and has won awards as the best floor finish in the USA for many years.

We offer this finish in three sheens: Gloss, Satin and Super Matte (super matte is the most historic look in polyurethane that adds depth without any sheen)

European Hardwax Oil Top Coat

Our European Hardwax/Oil Finish works well as a finish to our stains.  It is a more natural, softer look and has the added advantage of repair-ability.  You get the rich colors of our stains with the patina of a natural oil on top.

This is the oldest looking flooring we offer. Our oil over stain will achieve a foot worn look over time. Scuffs, scrapes, and accumulated character marks are an inherent feature of this floor finish. It is a magnificent recreation of truly colonial flooring.   You can even selectively "age" traffic areas to create a  more foot worn look. Simply sand in traffic areas with 100 grit sandpaper and apply some of the oil to the "worn" in areas.

This is the best alternative to recycled flooring without spending a fortune. (recycled flooring can easily cost over $20 a sq ft after installation and finishing)

Antiqued Black Flooring

It's Not Just a Floor ...It's a Feeling!

Our "Antique Pub Black" planking is the most dramatic flooring you will find. We start with a coat of high performance black paint and hand rub in areas of wear and distress as if the flooring was subject to years of use.  We then apply a coat of special stain to bring out the highlights of the areas that are now bare wood. We finish it with a commercial sealer and 2 coats of our crystal clear polyurethane.  (Because this is a limited, time consuming process, lead times for this finish may exceed 50 days.)
