Red Oak was Used Extensively in Colonial America
The strength and durability of Red Oak makes it perfect for wide plank floors. It is very hard (1290 on the Janka Scale), remains stable and has great graining and color variation . Although any wood will scratch or dent, it is the standard for hardwood floors.
Red Oak is abundant in the USA comprising over 30% of our hardwood forests. It is a sustainable forest product if properly managed.
Our Wide Red Oak Planks
We offer red oak in widths up to 11 inches and lengths up to 12 feet. We have found it to be the most versatile wood available and consistently yields beautiful results. These planks are handmade and hand finished

Finished Planks in our drying room |
We start with select, cabinet grade 3/4 inch kiln dried lumber and re-cut it to ensure absolute straightness over it's entire length and widths uniform within +or- 1/16 of an inch for each of the three sizes we offer.
We then cut in the ship lap joints, re-cut the ends to ensure a square fit and then hand-sculpt the edges and ends of every plank using old world tools and the skill that comes from years of woodworking.
This process ensures an easy and consistent fit of our planks for the installer whether an experienced contractor or a first time do it yourself homeowner.
We also offer red oak in "Select" 6 inch planks with a beveled edge and 6 inch rustic planks with knots, saw kerfs, sap lines and other natural characteristics.
Our 6 " Rustic White Oak
is extremely durable and beautiful|
|
| Rustic White Oak is extremely hard and full of interesting colors, knots and grains. Shown here with the 18th Century rosehead nails. |
White Oak is a fantastic species for flooring (1360 on the Janka Scale). We offer it in a rustic grade with saw marks, knots, sap lines, and unique grains that produce an extremely pleasing floor in rich tones. It is quite a bit harder than red oak and when finished top and bottom in the European oil is a very forgiving floor that is easy to maintain.
These planks are best installed with traditional 18th century rosehead nails, however they can be installed using traditional edge nailing . With the rosehead nails it is a very different look from 6 inch planks from other vendors that are without them.
Planks will vary in length from 3 feet to 12 feet and will average over 7 feet.
Rustic American Cherry in 6 inch Planks
|
|
| Rustic Cherry finished in OSMO Oil and shown with beveled edges |
While not as hard as Red Oak, Cherry has a softer natural color and grain structure. As with the white oak these are rustic planks and because of the rougher texture will tend to accommodate the inevitable dents and marks better than clear cherry planks that look perfect when installed and damaged a year later. Cherry planks will darken considerably with age to a deep reddish brown color.
We offer these planks with a bevel cut or optional handcut edging.
They are available unfinished or prefinished (top and bottom) with our European Hardwax Oil.
Rustic Hickory in 6 inch Planks
The hardest domestic wood we offer, (1850 on the Janka Scale) Rustic hickory is a fantastic choice for colonial flooring.

| Rustic Hickory finished in OSMO Oil and shown with beveled edges |
It has beautiful color variations, knots, splits, and fantastic graining. These 6 inch planks are also bevel cut on the edges, tongue and grooved and average over 7 feet in length. Available prefinished in Our European Hardwax Oil
If you like extremely rich color variation there is no match for rustic hickory. Cut from the center of the tree these planks will have amazing characteristics.
The picture shows the difference between FAS grade Hickory (the 3 planks on the left) and our Rustic Hickory (the 3 planks on the right).
